Municipal Law

The experience and knowledge of all our attorneys support cities and counties in the wide range of legal issues they face.  Our representation can include issues of zoning, planning, police powers, education policies, annexations, property taxes, employment law, special investigations, open meetings law, insurance coverage issues, and parliamentary procedure.

The circumstances facing each county, city, town, or village is different.  Our attorneys use their experience and creativity to craft individual approaches to each problem.  We regularly practice in legislative, administrative, and quasi-judicial matters in front of city and county elected and appointed officials. We also represent parties on appeal in front of Boards of Adjustment, and North Carolina Trial and Appellate Courts.

The leader of our Municipal Law section, Derek Allen, has twice been recognized by Best Lawyers® as Land Use & Zoning “Lawyer of the Year” for Western North Carolina in 2015 and 2020.
